Importance: This quote is one of the most important quotes in the novel because it foreshadows the ending of Charlie’s story. However, because Paul’s mother is suffering from dementia, neither the reader nor Paul know what she is talking about. This is intentional tension that bothers Paul throughout the novel. Furthermore, there are numerous things that Daphne could be talking about that Paul encounters, including Red Hands himself. However, it is revealed at the end of the novel that Daphne knows that Charlie’s body was hidden in the Dawson’s house and her mind held onto the guilt.
