Paul Adams
Paul Adams is the main character of the novel and the first-person narrator. Paul has extreme guilt over Jenny’s death that he recreates her in his head and his dreams to see her again. He is also grieving throughout the novel and initially struggles to be proactive until he imagines Jenny telling him to be more decisive. Paul spends the majority of the novel trying to figure out what his mother wanted to tell him at the beginning of the novel but is terrified that Charlie might return and kill him. However, Paul is shown to be fiercely loyal to those he cares about. An example of this is when Carl tells the truth about Charlie’s death.
