Summary
Chapter Twenty-One begins as Paul, nervous about sleeping at home, goes to James’s old house. He thinks about the fact that Billy is dead, and a part of him feels that Billy got what he deserved. However, another part of him feels that Billy has been dead to him for twenty-five years. Now, he feels sad, knowing that Billy had a hard childhood and likely suffered as an adult. He also thinks of how he told Amanda that Charlie is dead and his bones are somewhere in the Shadows. Even so, he feels Charlie everywhere and feels something bad is going to happen and he shouldn’t be in Gritten. He goes back home and convinces himself that Gritten is causing him to panic. He remembers Jenny saying the past cannot hurt him. However, he finds a doll that has been pushed...
