Years later, Ricardo, disappointed in his own son Jorge, who he thought was weak, sought out Julián with the intention of giving the boy opportunities. He puts Julián into a top school and welcomes him into his house. Aldaya is terribly shocked to find that Daniel and Penélope have fallen in love and worse yet, a child id conceived from this incestuous relationship. Aldaya in despair, imprisons his own daughter in her room. Even when Penélope enters into labor, her father does not free her. She dies upon delivering a stillborn baby in September 1919. Jorge told Miquel of these tragic happenings and Miquel then sends the letter in which Penelope denies ever having loved him to Julián.
