Hirut
Hirut is the daughter of Getey and Fasil. As a young girl, her parents are abused and killed by Kidane's cruel father. Hirut is taken to Kidane and Aster's home, and works under them for many years. Having lost all that is important to her, Hirut is meek and quiet. However, she defies Aster and Kidane in order to feel a sense of autonomy. When Kidane takes away the rifle her father gave her before she died, Hirut grows even more rebellious. When the war starts, however, dynamics between the three shift.
Camped in the hills of Debark, Hirut gradually understands that she must learn to fight in order to defend herself and her people. She invokes her parents' memories as a constant source of strength.
