Summary
In June 1461, Edward IV is officially coronated. In exile in Scotland, Henry VI, Margaret, and Prince Edward rally loyal Lancastrian troops. Again, Margaret is the real instigator with Henry "playing little more than a puppet role" (455). However, as time passes, more and more formerly loyal Lancastrians bend the knee to King Edward. Henry and Margaret's hope of an alliance with France is shattered when King Charles VII dies and is succeeded by his son Louis XI, who is "no friend to the House of Lancaster" (459). Nevertheless, with Edward IV retaining his hold on the crown in spite of fomenting rebellion and conspiracies, Margaret tries to pursue a French alliance. She succeeds in June 1462, offering Calais back to the French in exchange. Unfortunately for the Lancastrians, their agreements with the French and Scottish soon crumble when their allies change their minds.
