Summary
Part 3 begins in Paris with Althusser killing his wife after having lost the document he was hiding. Nikolai, the Bulgarian agent, is following Slimane, one of Barthes's gigolo friends, and then reporting back to Kristeva, who admits to killing Barthes. Kristeva decides to go to a Linguistics conference at Cornell, in Ithaca, New York, Slimane asks to accompany Foucault to the same conference, and Simon and Bayard are headed there too to talk to John Searle about the seventh function of language. Mitterand's people discuss the election, and one of them eludes to their secret weapon. Simon and Bayard are on the same flight to New York as Foucault and Slimane, Bayard searches their luggage, but does not find the document. Slimane doesn't have a visa to enter the U.S., but somehow manages to talk his way in.
