Summary
In Buchenbach, Wurz the mayor had been living in fear since hearing about the escaped men. One of them was Aldinger, a former rival whose son-in-law had opposed the Nazis. When they rose to power, this son-in-law had come to hide in the village, and Wurtz had informed the police. They had arrested Aldinger, and now Wurz feared that he would come back for revenge.
The Gestapo questioned Mrs Marelli, and discovered the sweater that George had left behind in her flat. Since this was the boatman’s sweater, they knew they were on the right track after all. Elli came to the market and ordered apples from Franz’s aunt. George saw a newspaper featuring pictures of the remaining fugitives: Aldinger, Fuellgrabe and himself.
