Summary
George spent the night in the cathedral. Helwig learned that the recaptured prisoner (Pelzer) was not the one who had taken his jacket.
At their headquarters in Frankfurt, the Gestapo interrogated Mettenheimer (Elli’s father), hoping for information about George. In Mainz, George found Dr Loewenstein, who treated his injured hand. One of the doctor’s other patients, a farmer, watched George with suspicion.
Franz was struggling to concentrate at work. He decided to find out whether Elli was still living nearby. Meanwhile, Belloni – one of the seven fugitives – had climbed onto a roof while a crowd watched below. He fell when the police shot him in the foot, and later died in hospital.
When he saw the old clothes that George had earlier hidden in the cathedral, the priest destroyed the evidence. George gave his jacket to a boatman, in exchange for the...
