The In Between

The In Between is the realm Maali wakes up in at the start of the novel. It is also the novel's primary, overarching setting. The In Between is essentially the Afterlife. Following his mysterious death, Maali finds himself occupying this unfamiliar realm. He convinces himself that he is dreaming, because he wants to escape wherever he is. He soon learns that he is not asleep, and that someone has violently murdered him. He resides in the In Between for seven moons, or seven days, before he entering The Light. Throughout his time in the In Between, Maali desperately attempts to communicate with his loved ones, and to control events happening Down There, in the world of the living.
