Evelyn Hugo (born Evelyn Herrera) is the reclusive 79-year-old movie star who narrates her life story to Monique Grant over the course of the novel. Evelyn was born in New York City and lost her mother at age 11. She fled her abusive father and moved to Hollywood with her first husband Ernie Diaz when she was 15. Once in Hollywood, Evelyn's beauty and voluptuous figure attracted the attention of producer Harry Cameron who signed her on as an actress with Sunset Studios. Evelyn's first big hit was an adaptation of Little Women in which she played opposite Celia St. James, an ingenue with whom she ultimately fell in love.
