Chapter 10 Summary

One of the sisters manages to convince Emma's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bloat, to let Emma go with Adelia because Adelia is a sort of doctor. Emma admits to Adelia and Gyltha that Talbot was coming to pick her up so they could elope to Wales. He had waiting until his 21st birthday because an estate in Wales was part of his inheritance. Emma says the guard gate and his cousin, Warin, were the only two people that knew.

Jacques brings a couple of messages to Adelia throughout the day. The first is that Bertha will be buried in the nun's own graveyard, a Christina burial. This indicates the nuns have completed their investigation and do not believe Bertha killed herself. Second, the message is a request to return Emma to the cloisters.

The soldiers have taken to drinking all night and fighting...
