Point of View
The novel is written in third person from a limited perspective of one character at a time. For example, Chapter 49 is titled “Dill” and Chapter 50 is titled “Lydia.” The two chapters are about Lydia leaving for college at the end of the summer. In Chapter 49, Dill works up the courage to tell Lydia he loves her. There are several sentences describing the thought process that leads to that point, including that he has survived a lot of things over the past few months and that there is really nothing else that he should fear. Chapter 50 changes to Lydia's perspective and her thought process, and she clearly feels like echoing the declaration of love, but she does not.
