Summary
In the West: Summer 1959, Irina began her next assignment in “The Student.” She was to hand out more copies of Doctor Zhivago at the World Youth Festival in Vienna. For ten days in late July, an estimated “twenty thousand international students” would be in attendance for the festival’s events (323). The Agency had printed smaller versions of the book to be passed out with other U.S. novels. She scouted the area for an optimal location to hand out books to the most students the day before the scheduled event. When Irina stood in line for food, she saw Sally.
