Summary
The year that Willie turned two, there was a bad winter in London. It was almost a relief for Thornhill when the river finally froze over and he was able to stay out of the cold. It was also that month that his world came apart. Lizzie grew sick with an inflammation in her throat. Medicine to help her was expensive and did not work. A short time later Mrs. Middleton injured herself in a fall on the ice. She lay in bed in pain unable to eat. Doctors couldn’t seem to find what was wrong with her.
