Summary
Peggy receives Kelty’s telegram in Chapter 31. She shows it to Wren on the beach. Hazel tells him how Oscar Wilde once said that telling “beautiful untrue things” was the aim of art (213). Hazel always felt there was some truth in what she wrote, and now someone in England has been moved by her writing. Wren suggests they go to London to investigate the mystery. He puts his hand on her cheek and then holds both her hands. Wren whispers to Peggy to meet him on the beach at midnight with a suitcase. Just then, Mother arrives to shout at Peggy to get back in the house. She yells that Wren was kicked out of Harvard. Wren looks ashamed. He tells Peggy it is true but not what it seems. Peggy longs to reassure him. She storms ahead of her mother back into...
