Summary
In Chapter 23, as the dig proceeds, they find a large sheet of glass that appears to be a window, but it is not attached to any other structure. Optimistic that they have found the bunker, they continue to dig. Soon, they uncover more human remains, and Shadwell worries that the remains are of the bunker’s former occupants. If so, it would potentially imply that the bunker was discovered and ransacked long ago. Many of the workers grow agitated at the sight of the remains. Fortunately, Fairfax, Shadwell, and Sarah are able to allay the men’s fears, at least for the time being. They continue to dig, and they find pieces of plastic and other remains of the pre-apocalyptic civilization. They find an old pair of eyeglasses.
