Summary

The men begin to discuss whether or not Harvey has left a will. The men seem doubtful that Harvey has made much money as a sculptor, and they comment upon the large expenses that were occurred by Harvey’s education. Philip Phelps says that, in his view, all money spent on Harvey’s education was wasted. Phelps also says that Harvey should have stayed and worked for his father, as tenants on Martin’s farms often cheated Martin. Another man interjects, saying that Harvey would have been an incompetent farm manager. Other men agree that Harvey was not competent at farm work. One man mentions that whenever Harvey made a costly mistake, his mother would beat him, even after Harvey had become a young adult.
