London is the overall setting of this story. The author does not reveal the exact time frame, but it seems that this takes place in modern times though the city and its residents have been slightly altered by the interactions with ghosts. For example, there is a strict curfew in place because of the ghost activities at night. There are also ghost lines around most of the city and running water in the shopping district.

35 Portland Row is where Anthony Lockwood's ghost agency is located and where Lockwood, Lucy, and George live. The house has three stories and a basement.
