Summary

In Chapter 23, Lucy has visions as she recovers, including an image of Annabel Ward. When she detects a ringing in her ears, she realizes she is not dead. Magnesium light illuminates the room. There are dislodged bricks around the well. She slaps George into consciousness. When she is sure he is alright, she gently shakes Lockwood. George notices the differences in Lucy's actions, prompting Lucy to say she will slap Lockwood next time. They discuss the situation. George believes the screaming kept them from realizing the well was the Source. Now that they can think, they know that was likely since the monks' bones are in the well. George believes the monks' spirits are so old that they have influenced everyone who lived here over the years, leading them to those appalling actions. They believe the ghosts on the stairs and the blood...
