Summary

Part III is titled The Necklace. Chapter 9 picks up in the Hope house which is on fire. Emergency personnel in chain-mail tunics arrive to put out the fire and tend Lucy's and Lockwood's wounds. Lucy feels guilty that she urged Lockwood to confront the ghost. Lucy is taken to the hospital while Lockwood talks to officials. At the end of the hospital visit, Lucy has a limp, some cuts, but no broken bones. The doctors give in to Lucy's demand to leave mainly because she is an agent. She walks home just after dawn. George is furious that she and Lockwood got themselves in that dangerous situation instead of waiting for him.
