Summary
Chapter 55
In Chapter 55, Tommy's funeral is held the day before the races. Gabe is saddened by the loss of his best friend. While Puck stands before the pyre, thinking of Tommy, Norman Falk, Tommy's father, joins her. He tells her that he has asked Sean to give Tommy's mare back to the sea out of respect for the dead and the capaill uisce, and he continues that Puck's father would not approve of her racing. Though Puck feels ashamed, after two weeks in the races, she "can see the allure of having one foot on the land and one foot in the sea. I've never known Thisby so well as I have these last few weeks" (page 355). She watches with pride as Sean releases Tommy's mare into the sea, but as Sean looks like he wants to join the mare, Puck realizes...
