Importance: In a memory, Thomas can recall listening to WICKED scientists and agents speaking about coming experiments that will be conducted to save the human race. This is the first tip of the hat that Thomas gets to understand that he himself is the most important future Glader, and the best hope that WICKED has to save themselves, and the human race.
It was clear now that the rescue from the Maze had been a sham.

Importance: Thomas, Teresa, and the other Gladers had all believed they had been rescued from the Maze. But, their rescuers are found dead, and WICKED is still clearly in control of the entire situation. This is a heartbreaking revelation for Thomas and the others, who were lulled into a false sense of security -and finality.
