Frida Liu
Frida Liu is the protagonist of The School for Good Mothers. Frida is 40 years old and a divorcee. She is the child of Chinese immigrants. Frida is close to her parents but otherwise has very few friends. She works at the local university creating short articles out of academic papers.
Harriet is the great joy of Frida’s life. Still, Frida often feels burnt out by being a mom in a society with such high expectations for mothers. Frida experiences an intense sense of relief during the two hours she spends away from Harriet. She pays steeply for these two hours and loathes herself from that point on. At the school, Frida channels her longing for her daughter into her doll, Emmanuelle. Frida hates Emmanuelle at first, believing the dolls to be evil, but soon grows used to her.
