Importance: This quote tells the audience Sophie’s state of mind at the beginning of the novel. Thought she claims to be good, she is clearly battling with evil. Even Agatha, who accepted Sophie despite her evil side, is scared by this outburst. Living with Agatha in Galvedon was supposed to be her happy ending. They defeated the School Master and made it home as friends. However, Sophie is not happy. She believes she can only be happy if her father dies. This brings into question their entire happy ending in the first place.
For in that single moment, watching the wedding she’d never have, Agatha had wished for something she never thought possible. She wished for a different ending to her story. An ending with someone...
