Marguerite slips out of the inn as soon as she can hear Chauvelin driving away in the cart, and follows on foot. They have not traveled far when Chauvelin is approached by two soldiers on horseback. These soldiers tell him that they found a cabin on a cliff where two men fitting the descriptions of Armand St. Just and Viscount de Tournay. Chauvelin becomes excited and orders his secretary and a dozen soldiers to follow them to the cabin. Marguerite follows.
