Marguerite goes outside to say goodbye to her brother before he travels in Lord Blakeney's yacht, the Day Dream, back to France. Marguerite is concerned for her brother because of the political turmoil in France. Armand St. Just raised Marguerite from childhood after their parents died. Marguerite feels closer to Armand than anyone, even her husband. It is revealed that it was for Armand that Marguerite turned on the Marquis de St. Cyr. The Marquis had Armand beaten for daring to love his daughter; therefore, when Marguerite came into some damning information about him, she told some friends she believed she could trust. It turned out, however, that these friends were not to be trusted and word of her accusations reached...
