Part One Summary
The Three Fates roll a ball of yarn and begin to weave a new life. The young maiden winds the yarn, and the motherly one begins to knit. The old hag brews tea. Each life they make is unique, and the hag expounds on how everyone complains, no matter what their life is like. She brings the maiden a ginger snap. The mother has a fortune cookie, and the hag eats a dead mouse. The fortune cookie foretells of a king leaving his kingdom and a great war approaching. The hag cuts the thread, ending the life.
In the human world, Lyta Hall yells at her son Daniel for getting sand all over the bed while napping, and her friend Carla calms her down. Carla, Lyta, and Daniel go out for ice cream; on the way they pass a crazy homeless...
