Summary
In Chapter 30, “Rae Lynn,” although Rae Lynn was afraid to drive to North Carolina because of Butch, she agreed to give Del a ride. He invited her and Cornelia to come to his sister Sudie May’s with him.
Riding in the cab with Del made Rae Lynn nostalgic for her life with Warren. Finally they arrived at Sudie May’s. Rae Lynn had felt purposeless “and disconnected” (302). Arriving at Sudie May's alleviated these feelings.
In Part III, “Nest,” Chapter 31, “Del,” returning to the farmhouse, flooded Del with childhood memories. He was glad to reunite with Sudie May, Amos, and their children. The family welcomed Rae Lynn and Cornelia, too.
Del visited his parents’ graves. He realized what “they’d had was what he wanted” (309).
