Summary
In Chapter 13, “Del,” Del still thought there was something strange “about Ray Cobb” (145). He was sure he was hiding more than his age.
At work, Ballard coughed “more than usual” (147). When he collapsed and died, some guessed he had the fever.
Crow volunteered to supervise Ballard’s men. Instead, Peewee gave Del Ballard’s position. Del accepted. Peewee warned him that Crow was “bound to test [him]” (152).
In Chapter 14, “Rae Lynn,” after Del left the workers, Crow held an impromptu trial. He asked the men if they thought Rae Lynn should get away with working slowly. Afraid to contradict Crow, the men suggested Rae Lynn needed punishment.
As Crow led Rae Lynn through the camp, she realized she had “got herself into a real mess” (159). Crow locked Rae Lynn in the sweatbox.
