Summary
In Chapter 7, “Del,” in his hut the next morning, Del “was reminded of home” (71). After preparing for the day, he joined his crew and set out into the forest. He could tell his Black coworkers were wary of him. He also noted Crow’s continued cruelty.
Over the course of the day, Del and his coworkers engaged in conversation. They told him more about the camp culture. Then, when Crow criticized Del’s work method and Del contradicted him, Crow led him to the sweatbox. Although he “couldn’t quite believe” what was happening, Del got into the box without protesting (82).
In Chapter 8, “Rae Lynn,” although Rae Lynn explained what had happened with Warren’s death, Butch did not believe her. He threatened to report her if she did not have sex with him and marry him. A...
