Summary
Part 5 begins with the draft lottery for the Vietnam War on December 1st, 1969. Vincent is one of the first men to be called to serve his country. When he gets the news, already knowing from past visions of his future, he is drinking at a bar. He gets so drunk that he can barely make it home, having to be dragged back to his house by two sympathetic veterans. Afraid for Vincent’s life, Franny goes to Haylin, who she knew was a resident at Beth Israel Hospital, to beg for his help to allow Vincent to dodge the draft. When she arrives as the hospital a nurse who knows Haylin informs her that he has left to join the Navy as a way to avoid the draft. The nurse also tells Franny that Haylin never married his fiancée.
