Summary
Ariel has different fantasies for her future. In her first fantasy she finds a new story to research in South Africa. She and Dr. John meet and, in his eyes, Ariel is no longer dead inside. She is able to leave the past behind when they kiss. Ariel does not know what to imagine next. She could move to South Africa, get married, have a baby, and achieve her dream of being a foreign correspondent. Or she could move. destroy her career, and feel isolated alone on a South African ranch.
In a second fantasy, Ariel goes to Cape Town and feels newly depressed and anxious. She and Dr. John meet but in this fantasy he is a stranger to her. Her losses continue to mount.
Still, the possibility of seeing John tempts Ariel. She quotes one of his emails in which he expresses...
