Summary
Ariel finds it hard to be single after a decade of marriage. She goes to her pregnant friend Emma's wedding and tries not to cry.
When they were younger Ariel was the more together of the two, but now Emma has everything Ariel has lost. Ariel reminisces about the last time the two were together, when they both were pregnant. She remembers their plan to raise their children as cousins and be godmothers for each other. In a small way, Ariel feels Emma's baby will be her's as well.
That evening, Emma's parents, who are from South Africa, tell Ariel about their home country. She is reminded of Dr. John and imagines visiting him. Levy writes about how Emma's parents never met in Johannesburg, despite growing up in overlapping communities, and did not get together until after they had both moved to the States...
