Summary
In another email, Dr. John tells Ariel about when he was in the army. He shares his favourite memory when he and two girls go swimming above Victoria Falls. One of the girls is not a very strong swimmer and nearly gets swept over the waterfall. John saves her life and narrowly avoids having to let her go in order to save himself.
Ariel is reminded of a novel in which a smart, independent woman is tempted to throw herself off Victoria Falls. In the novel, the woman knows she would not commit suicide if she had a life companion. Ariel relates to the feeling of being alone, and wonders if Dr. John has a companion.
