Summary
To get away from her marriage and her affair, Ariel accepts an assignment in Jerusalem. She is to write about conservative politician and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Despite disagreeing with his politics, she asks Huckabee what he has learned after 35 years of marriage. He says, "I think we both went into it understanding it was for life. [...] I've always said, if you believe divorce is an option, you'll take it" (98).
Ariel meets a woman named Mary who believes God chose her husband for her. Ariel loves the idea of knowing "that someone is yours, not matter what-- it is ordained" (99) She does not believe her marriage is ordained, but she believes she could have that type of connection with motherhood. She blames herself for being a bad wife and causing Lucy to get "weird drunk on a regular basis" (99).
