Boots
Boots is Beth’s dog that represents her freedom. When she has Boots, she is strong and confident, separated from her mother and incarceration. The first time she loses Boots hints at a possible loss of that freedom, while his removal from the story until the very end of the novel lines up with her incarceration in Clockwell. Boots is an example of Beth’s struggle to live for herself and provides extra support as she moves into the world on her own terms.
