Summary
Chapter 36 opens with a message from Francis as Mab visits his room after barely seeing him for months. Mab goes to visit her family and tells Lucy they can move to Coventry after the war. She returns to Francis’s room and sees a picture of him smiling as a soldier. She finds his poetry covered in criticisms and thinks of secrets he might be keeping. Once she learns Francis cannot visit, she writes him a letter. The chapter ends with a letter from Francis about his experience in the war and the day he saw a woman trying on hats. This pushed him to see happiness in the world just as he loves her.
