Daisy Adams
The protagonist of the novel, Daisy Adams, is a busy doctoral student. To support herself as she finishes her dissertation, she works at delivering papers, and writing cookbook for dog treats. After moderate success with the cookbook, she begs for a slot on a Washington DC area radio station. While preparing for her five-minute slot one day, she hears of a temporary opening as a traffic reporter and leaps at the chance to increase her income. In her free time, she volunteers as a crossing guard and counsels nursing home residents, which relates to her major in geriatric psychology.
Daisy receives training in traffic reporting from the station owner and manager. Immediately, she notices an attraction to him, which he reciprocates.
