Akoko
Akoko is the main matriarchal figure in the novel. She is the first daughter of Chief Odero Gogni of Yimbo. Her father loves and values her at a time when sons are typically held in higher esteem than daughters. Akoko grows up to be intelligent and outspoken. She is unafraid of speaking her opinion.
Her name translates literally to "the noisy one," as she cried a great deal as a child. She is frequently looked to for advice and support by her children and grandchildren. She marries Owuor Kembo and they have three children together. She has a close relationship with her daughter Nyabera. She survives the loss of two of her sons and her husbands, but stays resilient.
