Summary

Part Three focuses on Elizabeth and Mark as they start a family together. Their eldest children are twin sisters, Vera and Becky. They have strongly differing personalities. Vera is determined and hard-working. She learns to crawl and, later, walk, much earlier than Becky. Becky is very beautiful and is often admired by those around her. She sticks to her own schedule and does not seem concerned about the expectations of others. Elizabeth is concerned about the violence sweeping Kenya during its independence movement and decides she wants to move back to the town of Aluor with Becky, Vera, and Aoro, her newborn son. Mark remains in Nakuru for six months and struggles with his loneliness. He becomes dependent on alcohol and starts having an affair with another woman. The woman claims that she is pregnant...
