Summary

The story begins with the birth of Akoko, the first daughter of Chief Odero Gogni of Yimbo. The year is stated to be roughly 1870, as it is noted that she was born about thirty seasons before the railroad reached Kisuma. A great deal of care goes into naming Akoko, with the season of her birth, dreams of her ancestors, and her personality all being taken into account. This is particularly true of the last quality, as she is largely named for her loudness. While traditionally sons are more valued in their tribe, Akoko is constantly doted upon by her father.

Akoko grows up and is described as being beautiful, strong, and wise. It is decided that she needs to get married soon. Her father has trouble finding a worthy suitor until he meets Chief Owuor...
