Summary
The story begins with the birth of Akoko, the first daughter of Chief Odero Gogni of Yimbo. The year is stated to be roughly 1870, as it is noted that she was born about thirty seasons before the railroad reached Kisuma. A great deal of care goes into naming Akoko, with the season of her birth, dreams of her ancestors, and her personality all being taken into account.
