Summary

Chapter Nineteen begins with a description of the dark, quiet night. Brent goes into his and JD’s tent early, saying the next day will be a long one. Wynn sleeps out in the open, wanting to give Maia some privacy and space. Jack and JD sit by the fire, rifles nearby, and watching as the fire sinks into embers. The narration describes how Jack matches JD drink for drink a couple of times, and how he knew the best way to stay on the good side of a drinker was to let them think you were a drinker too. But Jack does not drink much after that first couple of times, watching JD restrain himself from both asking questions and from going into Maia’s tent. After a while, he stokes the fire “more to lull JD than to warm himself...
