Summary
As Chapter Five begins, Jack and Wynn watch as a canoe rounds a curve and comes closer. They are concerned because the canoe, and the man paddling it, are in the middle of the river and seem unaware of the rapids a bit further on. They whistle and shout to get his attention, wondering if the man is part of the couple they heard arguing. Jack wonders where the woman is.
Jack and Wynn help the man and his canoe on to shore. They see that he is relatively young, that his canoe is well stocked, and that he has a rifle with him. He also seems to be in shock, unable to respond to Jack and Wynn’s concerns with anything other than a comment that his wife Maia is missing.
