Summary

As Chapter Two begins, Jack and Wynn resume their journey. They are moving quickly, but stop to try and see what the fire is doing. Jack climbs a tree, and reports that the fire is huge. When he comes down, he and Wynn discuss what might happen if the seemingly fast-moving fire catches up with them. Wynn comments that it seems to be getting colder, but Jack seems to think that will not make much difference. He also wonders what happened to the quarreling couple.

Jack and Wynn pack up to move on, taking extra care to make everything secure. The narration suggests that without saying anything to each other, they are both thinking about their options – head back to find the couple, who presumably have a satellite phone, or paddle hard and try to outrun the fire.
