Chapters XIX and XX Summary
As they are nearing their own home in Chapter XIX Persis tells her husband she wants to see Irene in her room as soon as she gets home. She harshly tells the girl the truth of where the matter stands. Irene takes the news well, then asks to see Penelope a minute. Irene gives Penelope the souvenirs she has collected of Corey, and then requests that her father go walk with her. They walk aimlessly until they stop in front of the new house in which Irene says she will never live. Irene stops again at an apothecary store where she requests her father get her something to make her sleep. Irene then requests to be allowed to go to the family homestead in Lapham the next day.
