Chapter 8

Against Raul's wishes, they summon a Pax doctor and priest to find out why he is sick. Pax Dr. Molina arrives and diagnosis Raul with a kidney stone. She gives him the painkiller Ultramorph and questions him about his background. Under the influence of the drug, Raul tells her his name, his mission to find the Consul's ship, and about his life on Old Earth. Because Raul claims to have used the farcaster portals, which have not worked for centuries, to arrive on Vitus, Molinas concludes that he is delirious, but assigns a guard to watch over him and place him under arrest when he recovers. She believes that he is a soldier who has deserted from the Pax fleet.
