Chapter 5

Rhadamanth Nemes and her assassin siblings arrive on a planet called Svoboda, where they meet with Ambassador Albedo. He tells them that Aenea is back in Pax space, and, after bestowing the names Scylla, Gyges, and Briareus on the siblings, charges them with the mission to find and kill Aenea. He says they may have to work together to defeat the Shrike, if it again attempts to defend the girl.

De Soya meets with the fleet commanders running Task Force GIDEON, a series of raids to destroy Ouster systems. There he meets his executive officer Hoagan Liebler, who De Soya rightly suspects of being a spy and possibly an assassin placed on the new Raphael to watch him. At the meeting, the ship captains are shown pictures of the Consul's ship, and informed that it is to be destroyed on sight.
