Summary

The narrator began by musing about the differences between people who are from rich and poor families. He remarks that rich people develop a mindset of softness and cynicism. He then introduced Anson Hunter, the eldest of six children who were set to inherit millions of dollars. Anson was always in an entitled position, such that he received preferential treatment wherever he lived throughout his life, from Connecticut to New York. In his twenties, Anson was in the naval aviation division, and upon arriving in Pensacola from a tour, he met Paula Legendre, with whom he would fall in love. They flirted for weeks, and upon agreeing to get married one day, Paula told her mother, and then she told Anson about her family’s wealth. Paula believed that they would get married immediately, but Anson refused to discuss this.
