Summary
In Chapter 4: “The Field of Cormallen,” the narrative returns to Gandalf. Suddenly, there is the cry that the Eagles are coming. A great roar shakes the hills. Gandalf cries that the Ring-bearer has completed his quest, and the reign of Sauron has ended. A huge shadow rises in the south, extending across the sky like a giant hand, and then vanishes in the wind with a great rush. Gandalf soars into Mordor on Gwaihir’s back, rescuing Frodo and Sam.
When Sam wakes up, he thinks everything was a dream, but is astonished when he remembers that it actually happened. Frodo sleeps next to Sam, and Gandalf watches over them. The Hobbits are to attend a reception hosted by the King of Gondor. A huge group of people wait for the Hobbits, and when they emerge, the crowd bursts into applause. Frodo and Sam...
